Frame-accurate splicing for transparent advertising replacement and content blocking.

NAB 2013, Las Vegas, Booth SU8503: With broadcasters and content providers around the world looking to minimise operational expenditure and maximise revenues, Yospace is introducing a vital step forward: seamless in-stream content replacement for the Microsoft Smooth Streaming platform alongside content prepared for Apple HLS.

Content replacement allows a broadcaster to replace live material for which it does not have online rights, and to tailor advertising to the platform and the demographics of the user. Traditional technology downloads the replacement content in advance and expects the receiving device to perform the switching, which results in ugly transitions with buffering and spinning wheels. Consumers see this quality of experience as significantly lower than broadcast, so reject it.The Yospace solution, which is established for HLS streams (used for Android, Blackberry, Samsung connected televisions and even the Microsoft Xbox as well as iPad and iPhone), replaces the content in the delivery stream thanks to close integration with the broadcast playout automation system. To the receiving device it is a single, seamless stream with no compromise in the quality of experience. The Yospace solution is now also available for Microsoft Smooth Streaming, which is typically used on Silverlight platforms in conjunction with PlayReady DRM.“The internal architecture of the Smooth Streaming protocol lacks some of the flexibility of HLS, making content replacement technically challenging,” said David Springall, CTO and founder of Yospace. “Yospace has solved this problem, and can now give broadcasters exactly the same facilities for Smooth Streaming that exist for HLS.“Our HLS SDKs for Windows 8 and Flash obviate the need to use Smooth Streaming in many cases,” he added. “However, where broadcasters have established Smooth Streaming workflows to enable PlayReady DRM, we have the technology to provide the advanced simulcast features they need to enhance their monetisation opportunities.”Yospace will be demonstrating seamless content replacement across all platforms at NAB 2013, on Booth SU8503.
