Akamai and Yospace bowl up dynamic ad insertion for live cricket with SonyLIV

Posted on

Bengaluru, India – March 15, 2018 – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the world’s largest and most trusted cloud delivery platform, today announced that SonyLIV, the premium Video on Demand (VOD) service by Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN), providing multi-screen engagement to users on all devices, leveraged Akamai’s Dynamic Ad Insertion capabilities during the India-South Africa cricket series held over January and February 2018.

SonyLIV was the official and exclusive mobile and internet broadcaster for the India Tour of South Africa series and delivered it to millions of users seamlessly across a variety of devices. Digital advertisers gained the most through the course of the series, with Akamai’s Dynamic Ad Insertion delivering targeted advertisements during the live stream. With this partnership SonyLIV achieved a near 100% ad fill rate without compromising on the viewing experience for users.

Pitch Madison’s Advertising Report for 2018[1] projects advertising spend on digital platforms is to reach Rs.11,629 crores in 2018, representing a 19.5% increase over the Rs.9,303 crores spent in 2017. In 2017, the spend on mobile was 78% (Rs.7,256 crores) of the total digital outlay. Video represented 35% (Rs.3,300 crores) of the total spend. This indicates a strong reflection of growing consumer trends in the country. A report[2] by MoMagic Technologies found that 40% of Indians prefer to watch advertisement videos on their mobile phones over other media. Additionally, as per IDC[3], India is the fastest growing smartphone market globally with a total of 124 million units shipped in 2017.

Powered by advertising technology expert Yospace, Akamai’s Dynamic Ad Insertion is designed to help content providers offer greater monetization opportunities through online advertising, while maintaining a TV-like experience for viewers at scale. Server-side ad insertion, in which advertisements are stitched into content from the server-side, is intended to offer numerous benefits to advertisers, content providers and consumers, including:

  • Reliability and limitless scale for linear broadcast-size television audiences
  • Increased device reach with faster time to market
  • Improved viewing experiences and resiliency to ad blocking
  • Enhanced operational visibility through analytics

Sidharth Pisharoti, Regional Vice President, Media, Asia Pacific and Japan, Akamai Technologies said, “SonyLIV has a vast library of original content. However, in India, few entertainment options have the capability to attract mass audiences like cricket. While the challenge on the one hand is to keep audiences engaged with a TV-like experience, the equally hard part is ensuring that advertisers see value in leveraging digital platforms to drive views and consequently, revenue through advertisements. With Akamai’s capabilities, we were able to successfully deliver what audiences and advertisers wanted over the course of the India-South Africa series.”

Uday Sodhi, EVP and Business Head, Digital Business, Sony Pictures Networks (SPN) added “The India Tour of South Africa series was a huge success for SonyLIV and our audiences had a seamless experience throughout. We partnered with Akamai and leveraged their technology and added it to our already existing capabilities. The series was a huge hit with all the brands we associated with.”

With video poised to be the largest driver of internet traffic in the country by 2021[4], opportunities for publishers and advertisers in this space are only set to grow.

Bitmovin Partners with Yospace

With Yospace partnership, Bitmovin can now stitch ads directly into streaming video content, creating a broadcast-like transition between ads and content.

SAN FRANCISCO — 2nd August 2017
Bitmovin, the provider of streaming video infrastructure technologies, today announced it has partnered with Yospace, the leading provider of server-side dynamic ad insertion, to provide digital publishers using the Bitmovin Adaptive Streaming Player with the ability to seamlessly stitch ads into video content creating a broadcast-like transition that helps bypasses ad blockers on user devices.

Ad blockers are particularly prominent in the US and throughout Europe, especially among the coveted male 18-34 demographic, so any publisher or broadcaster trying to monetize those audiences could easily be prevented from reaching a major portion of them. With server-side ad insertion (SSAI), they do not have to worry about ad blockers since the content is stitched directly into the stream. Yospace customers have seen view-through rates regularly surpass 96% as a result.

“With the rise in popularity of ad blockers, publishers have to figure out innovative ways to monetize their content,” said Stefan Lederer, CEO of Bitmovin. “Server-side ad insertion eliminates the concern for ad blocking and gives any digital video publisher the best tool available for maximizing revenue, while delivering a killer streaming experience free from buffering or interruptions”

With this partnership, Bitmovin enables targeted live stream and on-demand SSAI using Yospace Dynamic Ad Insertion in combination with its Adaptive Streaming Player.

“Our partnership with Bitmovin is good news for broadcasters looking to take their OTT offering to the next level. Broadcasters are able to work with cutting edge video workflow technology that is integrated with a proven monetization solution,” said David Springall, CTO of Yospace.

Bitmovin and Yospace will demo this new technology at IBC 2017, September 15-19 in Amsterdam. Come by the Bitmovin booth in Hall 14, Booth E17.

Yospace and Adstream publish paper to promote Ad Copy Management

Posted on

Yospace and Adstream have published a paper, entitled “Translating Broadcast Ad Copy Principles to the Dynamic Ad Insertion Age”, to promote their findings on how to build an efficient targeted advertising structure for online broadcasting.

With TV programming increasingly available online, a door has opened for digital advertising with impressive reach and rich targeting options. This is really the first time advertisers have been able to deliver targeted ads against TV programmes. However, to achieve the same sophistication as other online channels, media, advertisers and technology providers must come together to drive standardisation.

Standardising OTT ads presents 3 major challenges:

  • Preventing lost ad space
  • Managing clearance and rights
  • Providing visibility of the results

In the white paper, which was presented at NAB 2017, Yospace and Adstream put forward their findings on what needs to be done to make efficient OTT advertising a reality.

Keepixo and Yospace teaming up for Dynamic Ad Insertion

Posted on

Grenoble, France – Staines, UK – April 20, 2017.

Keepixo, a leading provider of software-based head-end solutions for IPTV and OTT, and Yospace, a leading provider of Dynamic Ad Insertion solutions, today announced their systems have been pre-integrated to offer a full end-to-end monetisation solution for live TV channels when viewed online.

Yospace’s server-side Dynamic Ad Insertion technology allows broadcasters to replace advertisements across live streams in a way that reflects the seamless viewing expectations of broadcast television. Replacement ads can be tailored to suit the interests of each viewer, creating an environment in which view-through rates far exceed industry norms, which is great news for advertisers and broadcasters alike.

Keepixo’s packaging product is a flexible, feature-rich OTT packager. Provided as a stand-alone solution or combined with Keepixo’s live transcoder, it can address all OTT formats and requirements.

Technically, Keepixo’s equipment receives live audio/video streams with SCTE-35 ad markers, and encodes them in multi bit-rate for OTT TV platforms. Yospace’s platform receives that stream and, when it detects an ad marker, calls a 3rd party ad server which instructs Yospace which ads to stitch into the stream. Yospace manage each streaming session individually, which allows advertising to be served that is relevant to the user’s interests.

“Now that OTT services are becoming widely deployed, broadcasters and operators are looking for ways to monetize their content. And this is where Yospace comes in,” said Jerome Blanc, COO at Keepixo. “Yospace’s Ad Insertion technology combined with the flexibility of our OTT Encoder-Packager enables targeted and regionalized advertisements, and secures our customers’ ad revenues.”

“We’ve worked with Keepixo longer than any other encoding or packaging provider and we’re delighted to announce the pre-integration of our platforms,” said David Springall, CTO at Yospace. “Dynamic Ad Insertion is the most talked-about monetization solution for broadcasters today. One of the key factors behind a successful implementation is the relationship between the ad stitching platform and the encoding/packaging workflow, so this announcement is great news for all concerned.”

A demonstration of Keepixo’s OTT encoder-packager integrated with Yospace’s ad insertion solution will be available on Keepixo’s stand (#SU9102CM) at NAB/Las Vegas, April 24-27, 2017.
