TV3 carries Irish enthusiasm for Rugby World Cup 2015 into the future with dynamic online advertising

TV3, Ireland’s number 1 commercial broadcaster, implements the Yospace Dynamic Ad Insertion solution for the duration of the tournament and commits to long-term agreement following its success

Leading Irish commercial broadcaster, TV3, won the exclusive rights to broadcast Rugby World Cup 2015 to viewers in the Republic of Ireland. To optimise audience coverage and advertiser return, the forward-thinking, independently owned broadcaster live streamed the entire tournament of ALL 48 games on its 3Player and mobile apps, implementing Yospace’s dynamic advertising replacement solution to maximise revenues for the duration of the tournament.

The tournament was an enormous success for TV3, because when it comes to major sporting events, viewers want to see the action as it happens, wherever they are, and on whatever device is close to hand at the time. TV3 wanted to serve its audience with relevant engaging advertising so they needed to identify the technology that would provide seamless content replacement, at the scale of demand anticipated for Rugby World Cup 2015 campaign.

Yospace provided its unique server-side solution, seamlessly splicing personalised advertisements into the live stream before they reach the player. By taking information on commercial break patterns from the broadcast playout automation, and on the advert creative to be added from the advertising decisioning engine, in this case Ooyala Pulse, Yospace creates an output tailored to each individual user that has the professional look and feel of a broadcast channel output.

The system implemented at TV3 for Rugby World Cup 2015 utilised Yospace’s ESAM (Event Signalling And Management) server, which provided the link from the broadcaster’s playout automation to encoder, ensuring the stream is correctly conditioned for the yospaceCDS platform to perform the ad insertions.  By manipulating the HLS manifest for each user session, yospaceCDS can make individual ad calls to the decisioning engine, thus ensuring a more relevant and personalised viewing experience.

“One of the advantages of the structured, modular architecture Yospace provide is that we can implement systems for event television, like our initial installation at TV3 for the rugby,” said Tim Sewell, CEO of Yospace. “Our experience in delivering dynamic content replacement systems to broadcasters big and small allows us to reliably scale the infrastructure we need to ensure that we can meet the biggest peaks like Ireland’s big win against France.”

The TV3 dynamic advertising replacement project continued throughout the entire Rugby World Cup 2015 campaign to the final on 31st October, and, following its success, has been adopted as an ongoing service. Viewers will be able to continue streaming major sports events, as well as all other TV3 programming, on web browsers and TV3 players on iOS and Android devices.

QuickPlay Media collaborates with Yospace to deliver ad insertion for TV Everywhere solution.

Toronto, CANADA – September 12, 2014 – QuickPlay Media, the leading provider of cloud-based managed service solutions for the distribution of premium media to IP connected devices, today announced the launch of its dynamic ad insertion (DAI) capabilities for its live linear TV solution.

QuickPlay collaborated with Yospace, a content distribution innovator, to deliver a pre-integrated platform designed to splice ads into linear TV streams across iOS and Android tablets and smartphones.  The solution bolsters QuickPlay’s current national advertising capabilities with an advanced ad solution that enables service providers to further monetize content with TV Everywhere offerings integrating data from leading advertising engines and partners, including DoubleClick and FreeWheel.

The solution, currently being deployed for one of North America’s leading IPTV providers, brings 1:1 advertising to linear broadcast across connected devices.  Operators will now have the ability to customize ads and serve up user targeted ad insertion further supported by reporting and analytics. Subsequently, for content providers, DAI allows a better user experience by enabling the capabilities to deploy relevant ads to a mass audience base, and allows service providers to increase the value of their ad inventory.

“Having pioneered this market a decade ago, QuickPlay understands the need for service providers to continue to innovate and monetize TV Everywhere offerings. It is more important than ever that QuickPlay is able to support customers in further leveraging their PAY TV investments with dynamic ad insertion,” said Wayne Purboo, CEO of QuickPlay Media. “As TV Everywhere becomes core to multiscreen offerings, Dynamic Ad Insertion for live TV is the next step in enabling multiple systems operators to drive greater value, both in and out of subscribers’ homes.”

“We’re proud to be partnering with QuickPlay to drive forward the evolution of TV Everywhere. QuickPlay’s collaboration with Yospace for Dynamic Ad Insertion is a further validation of our market leading technology.” said Tim Sewell, CEO, Yospace.

The Yospace collaboration is part of QuickPlay’s industry leading effort to support new devices, networks and features with its end-to-end managed service capabilities. In addition to its existing VoD and Media Transformation services, QuickPlay now manages over 600 live channels and 30,000,000 consumptions per month through its global network operations center in San Diego. With the launch of LTE broadcast trials in September, it is well positioned to deliver continued innovative enhancements and features to customers via its managed services capabilities.

Seamless streaming and content replacement from Yospace

Proven technologies to maximise revenue and ensure compliance for broadcasters looking to deliver across multiple platforms.

NAB 2013, Las Vegas, Booth SU8503: With broadcasters around the world looking to maximise revenue and comply with regulations when streaming live content to the web and mobile platforms, Yospace will demonstrate a complete package of solutions at NAB 2013. The Yospace solution delivers a broadcast experience online, with no buffering or freezes even when replacing content in a live stream.

Being shown for the first time anywhere is SmoothStreaming support for seamless content replacement, including tailored advertising and content blocking. The Yospace solution interfaces directly with the broadcast playout automation system to ensure a completely seamless output so the consumer does not even realise that content has been replaced. Available and proven for HLS (Apple) platforms for some time, Yospace has now solved the considerable technical challenges of the Microsoft equivalent. NAB 2013 will be the first time this important functionality has been demonstrated, which will be of particular interest to broadcasters that have selected PlayReady digital rights management.

The new CableLabs ESAM specification specifies a standard interface between packager and encoder for seamless switching. Together with the Yospace interface for playout automation systems, this means that the online stream can be conditioned such that it splices in alternate content with frame accuracy. ESAM compatibility will also be demonstrated on the Yospace booth at NAB 2013.

The company will also be demonstrating how broadcasters can take closed captions to live web streaming, which has now become an FCC requirement in the US. The Yospace solution is an enhancement to its HLS support for Flash SDK which decodes CEA-608 closed captions within HLS streams, maintaining perfect synchronisation and thus enhancing the broadcast-like experience online without the need for closed caption workflow changes at the broadcaster.

These and other software applications to deliver content online and to mobile devices with broadcast quality of experience can be seen at the Yospace booth, SU8503, at NAB 2013.
